DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham County Sheriff's Office on Friday sent out a warning about racing on public streets and highways.

Sheriff Clarence Birkhead said people have recently complained about drivers racing their cars in competition with other cars.

According to the sheriff, if someone is convicted of racing, their car can be seized and sold at a public auction. The racer could also have their driver's license suspended.

“It saddens me to report a week does not go by when our deputies are responding to individual residents and local neighborhood groups calling us for service about reports of loud, late-night ‘car meet-ups’ across Durham County,” Birkhead said. “This activity is not only illegal but obviously dangerous."

Birkhead said the sheriff's office is working to hold individuals accountable.
