DURHAM, N.C. — Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews is offering a safe place for anyone who wants to buy or sell something on Craigslist, eBay or other websites.

Andrews said Thursday that buyers and sellers can conduct transactions in the parking lot at the Durham County Justice Center under the watchful eye of a deputy. The service is available by appointment only, weekdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Last month, the Orange County Sheriff's Office also offered a "safe zone" and deputies for transactions.

"The safety of our citizens is of utmost importance," Andrews said in a statement. "There are simple ways to provide a safe and secure community, and this effort seeks to advance that objective."

The deputy can also check serial numbers to determine whether property is stolen.
