DURHAM, N.C. — Durham Public Schools has named Eastway Elementary School Principal Star Sampson as the district's 2008 Principal of the Year.

Sampson, principal of Eastway Elementary since 2004, will represent Durham in the regional competition in the awards program sponsored by Wachovia Bank and the state Department of Public Instruction.

“Through her energy, enthusiasm and her passion for students, Star Sampson personifies every trait that comprises a principal of the year,” Superintendent Carl Harris said in a statement. “Her love for learning is infectious; it extends to her teachers, her staff, her colleagues, her students and their parents."

Before her tenure as Eastway Elementary principal, Sampson was an assistant principal at the school for a year and a curriculum coordinator for three years. She previously taught for 11 years at Holt Elementary School, where she was Teacher of the Year, and Merrick-Moore Elementary School.

During her first year as principal, Eastway Elementary was named one of the 25 most improved schools in North Carolina in the ABCs of Accountability report.
