DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham mother was shot to death Monday morning, just minutes after putting two of her three children on a school bus, according to police and neighbors. Her boyfriend was also shot and died after emergency crews took him to a local hospital.

Police did not say who might have shot Jerron McGirt, 34, and Jessica Liriano, 33, at their home in the 2200 block of Cheek Road.

Neighbors told WRAL News that they heard three gunshots, a pause and then more gunfire shortly before 7 a.m.

"We don't normally hear (anything) around here. I just kept laying there, and then I heard the police cars," said neighbor Dwight Gill. "I doubt they (the children) heard it, because as soon as the bus picks them up, they go that way. Right after that, that's when the gunshots start."

"It's a shock. I was surprised, never would have thought," neighbor Marshall Holloway added. "She was a very nice lady, and her boyfriend was very nice. They were real tight-knit, family oriented."

Police Chief Jose Lopez asked the community to come forward with information.

"We are hopeful that someone who was driving by here ... may have seen something," he said. "No matter how insignificant they might think it is, they can give us a call."

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator S. Pate at 919-560-4440. extension 29332 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.

Police were also investigating another shooting in Durham early Monday. Shortly before dawn, two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting inside a house near Gurley and Dowd streets.  At least two witnesses were being questioned.
