DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man is wanted in connection with the assault of a woman and a 1-year-old child, police said Thursday.

Police said that Maurice Cates II, 22, of Atka Court, assaulted the woman and child during an argument on March 15. He then took her cell phone and fled, police said.

Cates is wanted on charges of habitual misdemeanor assault, common-law robbery, assault on a child under 12, assault in the presence of a minor, assault on a female and interfering with emergency communications.

Anyone with information on Cates' whereabouts is asked to call Durham police at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for anonymous tips leading to arrests in cases.

Cates was released from jail in January after serving a year for probation violations, according to state Department of Correction records.

He was on probation for 2009 convictions for felony common-law robbery, misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, willful or wanton injury to property, resisting an officer and drug offenses. DOC records show he also has previous convictions for larceny and possessing stolen goods.
