Durham man shot while trying to buy game system

Posted March 4, 2012

— A 19-year-old Durham man was shot Sunday morning during what he described as a game-system purchase gone wrong, police said.

The victim told police that he and his friend met a man near McDougald Terrace around 9:40 a.m. to buy a game system, and they went with the man to an apartment complex on Lakeland Street.

There, a second man armed with a gun demanded money from them, police said. The victim fought with the second man, and the gun went off, striking him in the leg.

Police found the victim and his friend in a vehicle at Alston Avenue and Dupree Street.

He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Duke University Hospital. His identity wasn't released.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-638-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for anonymous tips that solve crimes.

My guess is that the "game system" was not something they could meet in public to view and purchase..lol.

let's see, I am going to meet someone to purchase something from the internet, and I am going to meet them in the crime ridden McDougle Terrace. Ok, he needs a sign "Professional Victim" so he can be identified easily. Common senseless!

No because ALL crime happens in durham...even "game-system" shootouts. I guess those Playstation's are over $100 might be worth risking jail for that.

This is something I think about whenever I make a purchase from craigslist. Thankfully, I've never had an issue. Hope he recuperates quickly.

That should be a lesson. Please don't go anywhere to purchase anything unless you are familiar with the area. At least go to a public place to make the purchase. This was a set up as you now know. I hope that you will not have any lasting effects from the shot in the leg.
