Durham group plans march to take back Ellerbee Creek Trail
A group from Durham is planning to take back the Ellerbee Creek Trail, where someone violently attacked two women, one of whom was also sexually assaulted.
Posted — UpdatedIn both incidents, someone came up behind the victims and choked them, authorities said. No arrest have been made in the attacks.
The women who organized Wednesday’s march said they refuse to let what happened keep them off the trail.
Joanne Abel lives along the trail and said she want to continue walking without feeling like another attack will happen.
“I walk on the trail every day,” Abel said. “I don’t want to feel violated.”
Abel and her friend Suzanne Clark, along with a few others, organized the event.
Clark—who said she herself is a sexual assault victim—is saddened, but not surprised, when hearing about the attacks. Along with walking and having a moment of silence, Clark asked the march participants to also make noise during the event.
“I wanted to do something with my anger instead of sit home and stew about it, or be suspicious about every stranger that walks by,” Clark said.
