Durham firefighter injured battling flames that left 5 people, 6 pets without a home

A Durham firefighter suffered an injury while battling flames last night at a home on Walsenburg Drive.

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham firefighter suffered an injury while battling flames last night at a home on Walsenburg Drive.

It took 35 firefighters about 20 minutes to get the flames under control.

The call came in around 9:15 p.m., when the unit first saw smoke pouring from the front of a three-story house.

Five people and six pets living in the home all escaped safely.

Responders took one resident to the emergency room to be evaluated. Three other people were treated on-site by EMS workers.

The house sustained heavy fire, smoke, and water damage, and the residents are displaced. The Red Cross is helping them.

It is not clear how the firefighter was injured, but the firefighter was taken to the emergency room for evaluation.
