Durham detention officer accused of having sex with inmate, fired

— The Durham County Sheriff’s Office has fired a detention center officer and charged him with having sex with an inmate, authorities said Friday.

Matthew Ethelbert Toney, 59, is accused of having sex with an inmate in January. He was fired Nov. 8 and arrested Thursday.

Toney, who had worked with the Durham County Sheriff's Office since 1996, was released on a $30,000 bond.

    This happened in January but has just been fired now in November. He is rather lucky it took that long to figure things out as he sat back knowing he committed the crime but continued to get paid. WOW!!

    11 months ago and he just got fired Nov 8th and arrested Yesterday ..... what is the hold up here ? were they waiting for DNA ?

    Try thinking first!! Perhaps the "victim" has just come forward. Or, working at the pleasure of the Sheriff, the Sheriff may have requested a polygraph. Good grief!!!

    You are assumog it was a female inmate. The females are monitored by female jailers, NOT male jailers.
