Duke testing alert sirens

Posted July 16, 2008

— Duke University planned to test an outdoor alert system Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. The system combines sirens and recorded messages broadcast across the Durham campus and in nearby neighborhoods.

The test was to take place Wednesday between 2 and 4:30 p.m. and Thursday between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The system, called DukeALERT, would be used to warn students, faculty and staff of an on-campus emergency.

Speaking of alert sirens ...it's a shame that cities like Raleigh and Durham for e.g. can't afford tornado warning sirens. Would be a nice back-up for NOAA alert tone radios.
