DURHAM, N.C. — A Duke University senior from Cary died Friday in a car crash on Interstate 10 in northern Florida, according to a university spokesperson.

The university said Rebecca DeNardis, 21, and six other students were traveling in a van with the director of Duke's Outdoor Adventure program when it was hit by another vehicle.

DeNardis was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Another student was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital in Pensacola, and a third student was treated and released.

Charges are pending against the driver of the vehicle that hit them.

The Duke contingent was returning to Durham after a five-day canoeing and camping trip along Florida's Blackwater River during spring break.

DeNardis was studying computer science and mathematics. She planned to work for Google after graduating in May.
