RALEIGH, N.C. — Thousands of North Carolina residents were still without electricity Monday after last week's winter storm.

More than 81,000 Duke Energy customers were without service as of Monday morning, but that number had been reduced to about 35,000 by 5 p.m.

Locally, about 18,000 Duke Energy and Piedmont Electric customers were without power in Orange and Alamance counties.

It could be Wednesday before power is fully restored, the Duke Energy has said.
