FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police charged a Fayetteville man Friday with second-degree murder in connection with a wreck last week that killed a woman.

Omar Deontate McEachern, 32, of North Forest Drive, also is charged with two counts of felony assault by motor vehicle and one count each of driving with a revoked license, seat belt violation and improper equipment.

McEachern lost control of his vehicle last Saturday morning on Country Club Drive near Commonwealth Avenue, police said, and the vehicle ran off the right side of the road and hit several trees.

Passengers Jessica Jones, 29, of Fayetteville, and Shawante Shaw, 23, of Raeford, were thrown from the vehicle, and Jones died.

Police said speed and alcohol were factors in the wreck.

McEachern was initially charged with driving while impaired, but police dropped that charge Friday as part of filing the murder charge against him.
