FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Thirty-three headstones were knocked over in a downtown cemetery last week, according to a Fayetteville police report.

The vandalism occurred last Tuesday at Cross Creek Cemetery No. 3, at the intersection of Ann and Lamon streets. There was no immediate estimate of damage.

The cemetery is across the street from Cross Creek Cemetery No. 1, which is on the National Register of Historic Places and includes graves dating to the 1700s.

In August 2006, more than 100 grave markers were damaged in all three Cross Creek cemeteries.
