Driver charged in I-440 crash that injured DOT workers

Raleigh police said officers were dispatched to a crash involving two vehicles and a pedestrian at about 1:25 p.m. on I-440 at the Capital Boulevard exit.

Authorities said that a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Angela Renee Roland struck two Department of Transportation employees who were on foot, as well as their parked truck.

Raleigh police said Darrick Bridges, 44, was pinned between the car and the parked truck and a Kelly Lewis, 46, was hit by the car and thrown over the guardrail. Officials said Lewis was discharged from the hospital.

“Safety of our employees and drivers is always a top priority and this incident highlights, again, the importance of work zone safety. We continue to urge drivers to remain alert and slow down when crews are working along the roadside or anytime an area is marked as a work zone,” said NCDOT Secretary Nick Tennyson.

Roland was taken to WakeMed for treatment of injuries. Upon release, Raleigh police said she was transported to the Wake County Detention Center and charged under a section of the state's "move over" law that applies to incident involving death or serious injury. She was given a $25,000 secured bond.

Roland made bond around 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to jail officials. Her first court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Police said the crash remained under investigation.
