DURHAM, N.C. — A family escaped a Thursday morning house fire, but their dog died, according to Durham firefighters.

Firefighters responded to the home on Lakeland Street around 7:30 a.m., where smoke was coming from the front door of a single-story home. Thirty-two firefighters worked to bring the fire under control in under 10 minutes.

The home was occupied by one adult, five children and three dogs. One dog did not make it outside.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
