Discovery of blasting cap closes Cary road

Posted April 30, 2012

— Police closed a one-block stretch of a Cary street on Monday morning after a blasting cap was found in a yard.

Del Webb Avenue was closed between Dowington Lane and Hennigan Drive.

A resident doing landscaping work found the blasting cap at 104 Dowington Lane shortly before 11 a.m., police said. Several nearby home were evacuated, but no injuries were reported.

The Raleigh Police Department's bomb squad was called in to dispose of the device, which is used to detonate explosives.

I used to use blasting caps to unclog grease fitting on heavy equipment used in or near salt water. Primacord is also very useful to cut down trees.

In similar news, someone was shooting bottle rockets over my house last night. I didn't see one cop anywhere.

Boy have we become a wimpy Nation. Blasting Caps, a box or two of dyminate and a roll of fuse were staples on every farm around when I grew up. A pile of chicken manure, maybe a bag of amonia nitrate that got wet and too hard to use and one cap and instant swimming pool in a some what dry creek bed.

That's out there by my Granny's old house, out there where Amberly is. There's alot of huge underground rocks in that area, so that's probably what it was used for. Back in the late 90's when that area first started being developed they would be blasting a mile-two miles away and it would shake and rattle every window in her 100 year old farm house.

We had some in the pantry a long time ago from when gran daddy blew up some stumps from the garden. The caps themselves are very potent . Would probably take a hand off easily. I stuck fuse in it lit it and threw it in the drive. I was impressed.. LOL
