PRINCETON, N.C. — Princeton police were investigating a shooting that left one man dead Monday afternoon.

Law enforcement officers and neighbors crowded around a taped-off area at the intersection of Elm and Second streets.

Aashon Morris, who lives nearby, said what sounded like an argument grew into a storm of gunfire.

"A lot of markers out there and it definitely sounded like two different guns out there. A lot of shots," he said.

Police said a man, who was not identified by officials, was found lying in the road with a gunshot wound to the head at about 5 p.m.. Authorities said the man was wearing body armor.

"I will say there was some body armor on the victim. I can't say what he was preparing for, but obviously there was something in mind prior to him arriving here," Police Chief Tyrone Sutton said.

Family members identified the man who was killed as Michael Joyner.

Police said Joyner's brother was in an argument earlier Monday with three suspects involved in the shooing and Joyner arrived to help his brother out.

"That is the reason he traveled down here from South Carolina," Sutton said. "An even larger argument ensued, some shots were fired and the victim was hit, a fatal shot to the head."

Joyner's cousin, WIlliam Joyner, said the family is stunned by the loss. He said Michael Joyner was retired from the Army and served multiple tours overseas.

Authorities said no suspects were in custody in connection with the shooting Monday night.
