CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — A Cumberland County teacher was arrested Tuesday after authorities said she assaulted a student at Howard Learning Academy.

Deputies said Kristian Cook, 36, grabbed a student by the throat and pushed her into a table during an incident that was reported on March 21.

Cook grabbed the child by the hair and forced her to the ground later that day, authorities said.

Cook, who surrendered to authorities Tuesday, was charged with two counts of simple assault.

She was released after posting $1,000 unsecured bond.

School officials said Cook had been employed as an exceptional children's substitute teacher at the school since Jan. 25, 2016. She was suspended with pay on March 21 and resigned from her position on March 28, 2018, school officials said.
