DENR issues permit for Person coal ash landfill
The state Division of Waste Management on Thursday issued a five-year operating permit for a landfill in Person County that will accept dry coal ash.

The landfill, located at Duke Energy's Mayo Steam Electric Plant north of Roxboro, will become the eighth lined landfill in North Carolina designed to accept coal ash. Six other landfills are located at power plants, and a seventh is operated by Halifax County.
The Mayo Steam Electric Plant landfill will feature a double liner with leak detection, groundwater monitoring and leachate collection systems to prevent groundwater contamination, officials said.
The first phase of the landfill covers 31 acres, and it could eventually expand to 103.8 acres and accept up to 1.6 million cubic yards of coal ash.
Disposal of coal ash has become a top priority for state officials since a February spill at a Duke plant near Eden dumped close to 40,000 tons of toxic ash into the Dan River. Lawmakers haven't yet agreed on a measure requiring Duke to clean up its ash ponds across North Carolina.
