— A damaged sign caused major delays on Interstate 540 between Honeycutt and Six Forks roads Thursday morning.

Authorities closed the two right lanes of I-540 East after a dump truck ran into a support pole holding up a digital message sign.

The contractor's truck was being used for the I-540 pavement preservation project that started this week on the westbound lanes, according to the state Department of Transportation.

All westbound lanes were open but were backed up due to onlooker delays. The lane closures were expected to remain in place until about 12:30 p.m.

what ever they paid for the signs it was too much. if they would have let the private sector do it they would have been free (paid by advertising), and would have been in color.

@smbiz - most of the time they don't do a lot. But when a major interstate is closed 5-10 miles ahead and you can find out from a sign like this, it can literally be the difference between a minor delay and 9 hours on the pavement. Don't denounce what you've never truly utilized.

"The signs may not be completely worthless but they are a huge waste of tax payer money"

Explain your position. The signs save me time and money, and as a TAXPAYER they are valuable to me.

You need to get out more. The signs are fantastic, very useful to those of us who actually get out and drive a lot for a living. Knowing about congestion, and that I can avoid it, saves me time and saves me MONEY.

Yep, telling the public of a Amber Alert of some kid killer and the car make, model, color on the interstate is a waste of money. Nevermind info for people travelling through the area, which is the nature of an Interstate, who are looking for all the info they can get.

Sometimes people can not see the big picture, especially on WRAL/GOLO
