Cumberland County fair rides sit idle days after opening
The Cumberland County Fair at the Agri-Expo Center has been open since Friday, but not all of its carnival rides are up and running.
Posted — UpdatedThe fair has about 30 rides, but 18 of them were not checked by state inspectors Friday, so they were not allowed to operate over the weekend.
“We did stump our toe a little bit with the carnival. They’ve got some things that weren’t quite ready,” said fair manager Hubert Bullard
The company that runs the carnival said that thunderstorms on Thursday delayed their ability to set the rides up in time for inspectors to look at all of them Friday.
Inspectors spent Monday morning going over all of the rides. Bullard said that while he wants everything operational, safety is the top priority.
“We are very conscious that every ride has to be…safe to operate. Every ride has to be inspected by the department of labor and if they aren’t safe, we certainly don’t want them to operate.”
Admission to visit the fair on Monday is $10 and grants unlimited access to all available rides.
“We should have about 22 to 25 carnival rides operating, so that’s a great deal,” said Bullard.
Parts had to be ordered for a couple of rides, which will remain closed until the parts are installed and the rides are inspected again. Most of the rides are expected to be up and running by Tuesday.
