Crabtree tower to omit condos – for now

Posted December 10, 2008

— The planned 43-story Soleil Center will be built in phases and won't include any luxury condominiums until the housing market rebounds, the developer said Wednesday.

The $175 million tower near Crabtree Valley Mall has been stalled several times, most recently by the nationwide economic slowdown. After the Raleigh City Council approved the project in November 2005, developers said they expected it to take less than three years to complete.

Construction on the 300-room Westin Hotel portion of the tower could begin in the spring, said Dicky Walia, a partner in the project.

Walia said the market for high-priced condos has evaporated, but developers could build condos atop the Westin Hotel once the market rebounds.

This project will not ever include condos. Who wants to live in a flood plain?

This thing was a mess from the beginning!

Great point, Paul. I have no idea how anyone with any credibility got away with this idea. I wouldn't park my car in the Soleil Center underground parking garage if there were any chance of rain.

Really, really odd place to put a tower. At least it's minimally above the flood plain.

Gee I'd love to spend big money on a quiet weekend getaway in that hotel with major construction going on overhead!!!!!!!

This was a delusion of grandeur from the beginning.

Typical...WRAL not up to date. Project will move ahead with Hotel only with ability to add condos later. Story sounds Tabloid at best
