— Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher will deliver the commencement address at North Carolina State University's winter graduation ceremony, officials said Wednesday.

Cowher, an N.C. State alumnus, coached the Steelers for 15 years and led them to a win in Super Bowl XL in February 2006. He retired at the end of the 2006 season and now works as an analyst with CBS Sports for the network’s “The NFL Today” show.

During the graduation ceremony, Chancellor James Oblinger will confer honorary degrees on Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County and a leader in the effort to assist minority and low-income students in academic achievement, and Carl E. Wieman, a Nobel Prize-winning professor of physics at the University of British Columbia.

The ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 17 at the RBC Center.

jsb23nc, you're just jealous that you won't be there.

    I know I'm jealous I won't be there!

As alumni that heard Mr Rogers speak at his graduation, I think Cowher is a fantastic choice. There is more to life than pointy headed professors conferring honorary degrees on each other. It is good to see NC State alumni returning to NC State as successful in life.

Michael Richards would be a more appropriate speaker for NC State.

OMG...don't sit on the front row!

Good for NCSU. Did Mary Easley's unique skills pull this one off?

At least Bill has "done something". Most commencement speakers are bags of academic hot air in love with their own voices.

I think he's a great choice! A very successful alum who likely has experience in motivational speeches from his coaching days. I skipped my own graduation (Phil Donahue was the speaker), but would have gotten there for Bill!

I like the pick. Would have much rather had Cower than the president of Teach for America, who spoke at my commencement.

Years ago, Mr. Rogers was the speaker and students threw fits because they thought it was "insulting" to have the man who talks to children speak at their graduation. Fast forward to graduation day, Carter Finley was packed and the audience all sang "Won't You Be My Neighbor" together. It proved to be one of the most inspiring graduation speeches I have ever heard.

Not all great speakers have to be scholars. I think Cowher is a fine choice.

jsb23nc - Give me a break. Cowher was a great football coach, a Super Bowl winning coach, and an outstanding leader. Who would you suggest as a speaker?

    Next coach of the wolfpack?
