RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh man was arrested Monday and charged with murder and the sale of drugs in connection to a crime from 2017.

Treveris Montel Coward, 28, faces a charge of second-degree murder, one for the sale of Fentanyl and one for conspiracy to sell or deliver the drug.

Fentanyl, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, is a powerful synthetic opioid similar to but more powerful than morphine. It is a prescription drug that is also made and used illegally.

In 2017, synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, were the most common drugs involved in drug overdose deaths in the United States.
