A Timberlake couple that was reported missing early Sunday have returned home safely, according to the Person County Sheriff's Office.

A Silver Alert was issued for Leola Baker Lowe, 84, and her husband, Donnie Dean Lowe, 83, shortly after 1 a.m. Authorities said the couple left their home and were last seen driving on N.C. Highway 49.

It wasn't clear how long they were gone before returning home.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert system quickly notifies the public about missing endangered people who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.

Well, you never know. I used to work in a convenience store in southern Orange county and a guy came in one day asking directions. I considered myself pretty good with directions but he was asking about highways I had never heard of. Turns out he thought he was up near Lynchburg VA ... I think some dementia was working there. Didn't think much about it at the time but if it was today I'd call the sheriff to help them out. I did my best to get him back up there ...

Hope all is well with them... Maybe they just wanted to go out and "park" like they did in the old days!
