Compromise in Works to Save Durham YMCA
Posted October 31, 2007
Durham, N.C. — A Durham YMCA slated to close may get some new life after all.
In May, officials announced plans to close the Lakewood YMCA because it's losing money, but an idea has been pitched that would keep some of the programs running.
The recommendation was to sell the building to someone in community with similar goals and have them renovate it. In turn, the seller could rent part of the building back to the YMCA for some youth and adult programs.
The Triangle Board is expected to vote on the plan in January. In the meantime, the Lakewood YMCA will remain open.
