Coast Guard rescues crew, boat off NC coast
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued seven people Wednesday from a 26-foot boat that had started to sink about 14 miles east of Cape Hatteras.
Posted — UpdatedPassengers aboard Going Deep contacted the Coast Guard about 4:30 p.m. to report that the boat was taking on water, officials said.
The Coast Guard launched two boats to assist Going Deep, and the merchant vessel Diamond Lady responded to the scene to act as a communication relay with emergency crews.
Six people aboard the sinking boat were taken aboard the Coast Guard's 25-foot response vessel, and Petty Officer 1st Class Mark Burgoa assisted the captain in bailing out water from Going Deep for about 30 minutes.
Another Coast Guard vessel arrived, and the boat was towed to Teach's Lair Marina in Hatteras. No injuries were reported.
"The crew put their training and knowledge they have gained at the station into this case," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Scott Hunter said in a statement. "That is why we train and practice every day, so that when we do get that call, the response is second nature."
