Coast Guard, fishing crew rescue 4 following 'in-air mishap' off NC coast

The U.S. Coast Guard and a Good Samaritan fishing vessel crew rescued four survivors Thursday morning following an "in-air mishap" involving two F/A-18F Super Hornets off the coast of North Carolina.

NAGS HEAD, N.C. — The U.S. Coast Guard and a Good Samaritan fishing vessel crew rescued four survivors Thursday morning following an "in-air mishap" involving two F/A-18F Super Hornets off the coast of North Carolina.

Officials said the incident happened about 25 miles east of the Oregon Inlet, in Nags Head, at about 10:30 a.m. The crew of the commercial fishing vessel Tammy help to recover the four survivors.

An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City took the Navy pilots to a hospital in Norfolk. All four of the pilots suffered minor injuries.

The jets were from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA)211 at Naval Air Station Oceana.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

No additional information was immediately available.
