CNN Entertainment's "As Told By Her" series highlights iconic work by women in television.

So we asked CNN readers to share their favorite female TV characters and received hundreds of responses.

Mary Tyler Moore's Mary Richards -- by far, readers' top choice -- shattered television gender norms in the '70s. Buffy the Vampire Slayer redefined what it meant to "fight like a girl." And "Star Trek's" Lt. Uhura inspired a generation to imagine a more equal future.
