WARRENTON, N.C. — A driver told the North Carolina State Highway Patrol that she swerved to miss a child in her path on Martin Luther King Road in Warren County Thursday but still hit the child.

Troopers said the driver would not face charges for injuries to 9-year-old Jayla Owen.

Jayla's parents said she had gotten off the school bus and, as was her habit, had checked the mail. When she stepped back into the road, the car hit her.

Jayla was airlifted to Duke University Hospital with serious injuries.
