DURHAM, N.C. — State troopers chased a driver in Durham and Orange counties Friday afternoon at speeds reaching 100 mph, Sergeant Jeff D. Gordon of the state Highway Patrol said.

Troopers attempted to stop a man driving a black SUV on 15th Street in Durham. He fled and led authorities into Orange County and back into Durham on Interstate 85, Gordon said.

During the chase, the driver struck a Highway Patrol car, doing minor damage. The SUV and a second patrol car also sustained minor damage. Two troopers and the driver of the SUV were injured. None of the injuries were serious.

The chase ended on I-85 near N.C. Highway 147 when troopers were able to pull alongside the vehicle and force the driver to swerve and stop, a method called a PIT maneuver.

Troopers did not say why they tried to stop the car in the first place or release the identity of the man arrested.
