Charges upgraded against driver after man hurt in Zebulon crash dies

A Wayne County man has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle after a man hurt in a crash in Zebulon early this month died, police said Wednesday.

ZEBULON, N.C. — A Wayne County man has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle after a man hurt in a crash in Zebulon early this month died, police said Wednesday.

Ramiro Ramirez, 44, of 226 Beaver Drive in Dudley, was initially charged with a red light violation and driving without a license in the April 3 crash.

Police said Ramirez ran a red light at N.C. Highway 96 and the exit ramp from U.S. Highway 64, and his van collided with a vehicle merging onto N.C. 96 from U.S. 64.

Lorine and George Jones, both of Bunn, were injured in the crash. George Jones, 88, died Monday from his injuries, while his wife remains hospitalized.
