CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Chapel Hill Museum closed its doors Sunday for good because of financial problems.

Due to the recession, the museum has suffered from fewer donations. In April, museum officials requested funding from the town to help keep the building on East Franklin Street open.

The council agreed to help but the amount decided upon was not enough to keep the museum operating, officials said.

The museum opened in 1996 and served about 15,000 visitors annually.
