RALEIGH, N.C. — Cinco de Mayo is measured in number of margaritas drank and how much queso is consumed...not in caloric intake. With this in mind, I am going to share with you some of my personal TOP spots to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year! These local gems are also a great place to satisfy your Mexican craving any day of the year.

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of an unlikely battle that was won over the French. It’s interesting to note that although the day is celebrated, it is not a federal holiday in Mexico.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican culture!

Here are my favorite places to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the Triangle:

We start off with the amazing combination of Centro and Gallo Pelón! Both spots are located at 106 S Wilmington St. in downtown Raleigh, Although they share an owner, each location is very different.

Cinco de Mayo Specials
  • $5 Boilermakers (Jimador Reposado & Modelo sidecar)
  • $5 Infused Mezcales (strawberry, chili)
  • $5 *Award-winning 'Perro Caliente' (Colombian-style Hot Dog)
  • Special margarita menu
  • $5 Authentic Taco Menu
  • $5 Espolón Shots

It’s interesting to note that $1 of every Margarita sale at Centro and Gallo Pelón on Cinco de Mayo goes to support NC Equality! Celebrating for a good cause!

What is Cinco de Mayo without tacos and tequila?
Gonza Tacos y Tequila knows best when it comes to serving the Triangle all things taco and tequila related! With multiple locations this is a SURE BET for Cinco de Mayo no matter where you are in the area! The full menu will be available for lunch, but the evening menu will be all about tacos!
Dos Perros in Durham will be celebrating the battle of Puebla for Cinco de Mayo, with specials from Puebla Mexico!
Cinco de Mayo Specials
  • Chicken mole with traditional poblano mole
  • Chiles en nogada (a traditional celebration dish- poblano chile stuffed with beef picadillo with apples and peaches, topped with cream pecan cream sauce and pomegranate seeds)
  • Ceviche tostada of bay scallops and citrus.
  • The specialty margarita for the evening will be a sweet potato margarita.

*All margaritas are made with 100 percent agave tequila and fresh squeezed juice.
