CLAYTON, N.C. — The Caterpillar assembly plant is planning to expand its operations in Clayton, Mayor Pro Tem Robert J. Ahlert said Saturday.

Currently Caterpillar operates its plant on the south side of N.C. 42. The town council has already rezoned 250 acres near N.C. 42 for industrial use.

Before the expansion can begin, Caterpillar will need to obtain a special-use permit.

If approved, the new facility would be a test site for Caterpillar’s new products.
