Cary woman accused of leaving crash scene, injured man to take exam

Myriam Povedo Urbano, 53, of 1018 Manchester Drive, was charged with felony hit-and-run causing serious injury. She was released Tuesday morning after posting a $10,000 bond.

According to the State Highway Patrol, Urbano and Jerry Locklear were in a traffic crash on Ten Ten Road near Lake Wheeler Road, and Locklear was knocked unconscious in his car.

"It was actually a disaster. It completely knocked me out," Locklear said Tuesday, noting that he was on his way to a golf course for some practice when Urbano rear-ended him.

A witness told Highway Patrol Trooper K. Mills that Urbano flagged down a passing driver to give her a lift to Wake Tech, leaving her damaged car in the middle of the road.

Study material inside her car and a Wake Tech bumper sticker led investigators to Wake Tech's main campus off U.S. Highway 401 south of Raleigh.

"She felt like she needed to take the final exam," Mills said. "She didn't realize the gravity of the situation, and she still made the decision to leave the scene of an accident where someone was hurt and she was at fault."

Wake Tech officials said Urbano has been enrolled at the school since May 2013 studying for an associate's degree in general education.

Locklear said too grateful to have survived the wreck to be angry with Urbano.

"The girl might not have known what she was doing," he said. "I won't put it to hard on her. I am just glad the good Lord let me live."
