Cary warns of potentially rabid fox

Cary town officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for a potentially rabid fox after a man reported coming into contact with one last week.

CARY, N.C. — Cary town officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for a potentially rabid fox after a man reported coming into contact with one last week.

Maj. Tony Godwin with the Cary Police Department said the man encountered the animal near Northwest Maynard Road and Carrousel Lane on Friday and is undergoing treatment for rabies as a precaution.

"At this time, we need citizens to be watchful as they enjoy the outdoors, paying attention to any suspicious animal activity and promptly notifying local officials as necessary," Godwin said.

Anyone suspecting a rabid animal or believes they have come in contact with one should contact Cary Animal Control immediately at 919-319-4517.

Residents should use caution and stay away from wild animals as well as animals they are unfamiliar with, and Godwin recommended pet owners to keep their pets' rabies vaccinations current.

The town is hosting a rabies clinic at its annual Dog Days of June celebration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 1. Vaccinations for cats and dogs are $5.
