— A Cary High School student struck by a car Wednesday has been released from the hospital.

Heather Bowden, 16, was walking away from the school at a pedestrian crosswalk near the intersection of Walnut Street and Maynard Road when she was struck by a blue Dodge Neon, authorities said.

The driver of the car, Allison Monce, 24, has not been charged with a crime.

Bowden was taken to WakeMed as a precaution, Cary police said.

Sgt. Greg Savage with the Cary police said the crosswalk is relatively new to the area of campus and was put in place as a result of other accidents there.

I love these comments all criticizing the kid. If the story is accurate, and she was in a marked crosswalk, then a law was broken and the drive needs to be charged.

NC 20-155 "(c) The driver of any vehicle upon a highway within a business or residence district shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing such highway within any clearly marked crosswalk..."

I love how pedestrians rights are so totally ignored in this state. I wonder why DOT even bothers to paint the crosswalks.

If there isn't a more important place for drivers to be especially careful than marked crosswalks near a school, I can't imagine where that would be...

Glad to hear she is going to be alright.

Apex High School is located right off of Hwy 64 at a very busy intersection. A couple of years ago, a kid walked right out in front of a car and was nearly killed. Teens are not really known for being "all there", so a lot of times they don't realize the danger around them when they are "zoning out"... Add I-pods or cell phones into the mix and they are really in trouble.

I am glad that she is ok but the students place themselves in dangerous situations at times. I work across the street in the office building and I see kids racing cars through the parking lot and running across the street as if they are invincible.

I enjoy the summer months that they are on break and I don't have to contend with them. I truly feel that schools should be located in isolated areas and not in the middle of town where there is a higher risk of injury from traffic incidents.

Those kids have entirely too much freedom!

"A Cary High School struck by a car Wednesday" Whaaaatttt! And I thought I could not type correctly. Thanks WRAL

I attended Cary High School a few years back and yes it is a bad cross walk, People don't respect the speed limit and when you have to cross you have to pray so someone doesn't run over you. Glad she is Okay.
