Cary police solve series of thefts with traffic stop
A man who fled from police at a routine traffic stop in Cary has been connected to 21 cases of larceny from a vehicle involving dozens of victims, police said Wednesday.

Matthew T. Sapienza, 25, ran when police pulled him over for driving without his tail lights on.
Police searched his car and found items reported stolen from cars in the Cary area. A subsequent search of his home yielded more stolen goods. In all, police linked Sapienza to 19 cases in Cary and two in Morrisville. They charged him with possession of stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.
Sapienza pleaded guilty to those charges and was extradited to Pennsylvania, where he was wanted on other, unrelated charges, police said.
