SANFORD, N.C. — A fire that burned several acres of woods in Lee County on Thursday started in a vehicle, authorities said.

Sanford Fire Department Chief Wayne Barber said a car traveling on Broadway Road near the U.S. Highway 421 bypass caught fire and pulled over on the shoulder shortly after noon. The flames from the car spread to the grass and quickly consumed 5 to 8 acres, Barber said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in less than an hour, and no one was hurt.
