Car crashes into Durham fire station

Authorities said that a female driver reported seeing a blinding light before crashing into Fire Station 14 at 1327 Umstead Road just after 4 p.m.

DURHAM, N.C. — No firefighters were injured after a car drove into an occupied Durham fire station Monday afternoon.

Authorities said that a female driver reported seeing a blinding light before crashing into Fire Station 14 at 1327 Umstead Road just after 4 p.m.

Officials said that bedrooms and a bathroom were behind the exterior wall the driver hit and one firefighter had just exited the area. Authorities said a bedroom and bathroom were severely damaged.

Authorities said the building must be evaluated before firefighters can continue using it. the engine company has been relocated for the time being.

The driver of the car sustained minor injuries and authorities have not said if she will be charged.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Authorities said that Monday's incident is not the first time someone has hit the fire station. A protective barrier was installed last year, which slowed the car, but was unable to stop it.
