Cisco CEO to deliver Duke commencement address

The chairman and chief executive officer of the networking giant, which employs more than 4,000 people in the Triangle, will speak on May 15.

DURHAM, N.C. — John Chambers, chairman and chief executive officer of networking giant Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO), will deliver the commencement address at Duke University on may 15.

Duke President Richard Brodhead made the announcement Tuesday.

Cisco employs more than 4,000 people at its campus in Research Triangle Park.

“John has been a leader in an industry requiring constant innovation that has contributed to the connectivity of modern life," Brodhead said in a statement. "His commitment to global citizenship and corporate responsibility will inspire our students as they contemplate their future directions.”

Chambers is an active philanthropist in addition to running one of the world's top technology companies.

He also has a connection to Duke, having attended Duke's School of Engineering in 1967. He later transferred to West Virginia University.

The commencement program will begin at 10 a.m. in Wallace Wade Stadium.
