Fowler Contracting plans to close its operations by April 4 and lay off about 300 people, according to a letter given to employees Wednesday.

CARY, N.C. — Fowler Contracting plans to close its operations by April 4 and lay off about 300 people, according to a letter given to employees Wednesday.

The company does site development for real estate projects, including clearing and grading land, installing utilities, curb and gutter work and landscaping.

The company cited "adverse economic conditions" for the closing, according to the letter."

Fowler Contracting was founded in 1984 and has been recognized in recent years as one of the region's fastest-growing private companies. President and Chief Executive Steve Fowler was named an entrepreneur of the year in 2006 by accounting and consulting firm Ernst & Young.
