High-Tech Metals Plant in Union County to Add 125 Jobs

ATI Allvac, a manufacturer of high-tech metals and alloys for use in aerospace and defense as well as other industries, will invest $210 million and add 125 jobs at its facility in Union County, Gov. Mike Easley announced Tuesday.

The company had originally announced its expansion plans in January.

ATI Allvac will receive a $300,000 One North Carolina Fund grant as an economic incentive. Such grants require at least a local match from other government agencies and partners.

The company already employs 1,107 people at its facilities in Union County towns of Monroe and Bakers. It is part of Allegheny Technologies, which is based in Pittsburgh. Allegheny technologies reported $4.9 billion in revenues in 2006.

Neither the company nor its products are traditional steel or metal manufacturing endeavors. Allegheny Technologies focuses on what spokesperson Dan Greenfield described as “very high-end, sophisticated manufacturing.”

Its metals are found in the rotating parts of jet engines, gas turbines, medical devices and even space craft.

Average wages will be $799 per week plus benefits compared to the average Union County wage of $579 plus benefits.
