WILMINGTON, N.C. — A brush fire within Wilmington city limits grew to 60 acres before being contained Tuesday night, authorities said.

Battalion Chief Charles Smith of the Wilmington Fire Department reported that the fire is now almost completely under control, but hot spots are expected to burn for weeks.

The fire burned along both sides of 17th Street in a wooded area between George Anderson Drive and Independence Boulevard. Fifteen to 20 homes were evacuated.

There were no injuries reported, but three homes were damaged on Donald Gore Drive near George Anderson Drive.

Fire crews plowed containment lines and the state Forest Service helped with ground and air support to put out the fire.

No other information is currently available.
