— A brush fire consumed approximately 25 acres off Interstate 540 East between Old Milburnie Road and Knightdale Boulevard on Tuesday morning.

Authorities said they believe hot metal from a catalytic converter sparked the fire, which started around 10:45 a.m. and lasted about three and a half hours.

Two small maintenance sheds were damaged, along with 25 acres of field. No one was injured.

Approximately 50 firefighters responded to the scene, including the Knightdale Department of Public Safety, New Hope Fire, East Wake Fire and the U. S. Forestry service.

If you see a litter bug and get their plate number you can turn them in on the ncdmv site and after a couple of complaints they will get a citation in the mail.

YEAH RIGHT!!! they cant issue me a citation without proof and a few whining posts on a website does not equal proof

it is actually illegal in NC and several other states to flick your cigarette butt out while. it is called littering, and you should be fined for it.
the little spark can cause a whole lot of damage. it started a fire that destroyed several homes in Raleigh several years ago (off capital, behind babies r us). Rain or no rain, it will get blown with the wind we've been having into something bigger and cause something like this.
Get an ashtray. Treat the road like you would your house. Pick up your trash. Respect the earth, and the people that live on it.

It says nowhere that a citation will be issued in the mail. A letter reminding them what they are doing wrong, yes. But no citation. I wish it were that easy.

WRAL is to blame for inaccurately reporting the location. The fire actually appears to be located near I-540's interchange with *US 64 Business*, not the interchange with US 64 (also US 264) a couple of miles further south. I continue to be disappointed with WRAL's constant reference to Knightdale Boulevard as "US 64", when it's actually been US 64 Business ever since the new US 64/264 freeway was constructed a number of years ago.
