CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A broken water main caused a 6-foot-wide sinkhole to open up early Tuesday near the intersection of Old Forest Creek Drive and Piney Mountain Road north of downtown Chapel Hill.

Emergency crews responding to the area about 4 a.m. shut down one lane into the Old Forest Creek Drive neighborhood, and officials said it could be several hours before the broken water main is fixed.

No information about the cause of the water main break was released, but work crews told WRAL News the neighborhood won't have water service until the main is repaired.
