Brawl over bed sparks shooting in Chatham County

A Chatham County man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on accusations that he fired a shotgun at his nephew during an argument over a bed.

GOLDSTON, N.C. — A Chatham County man was arrested Wednesday afternoon on accusations that he fired a shotgun at his nephew during an argument over a bed.

Sheriff's deputies responding to calls about a shooting found the victim, Raymond Junior Cotten, 31, of Bear Creek, walking down Pinecrest Drive near Goldston. Deputies said he was treated at the scene for several superficial shotgun wounds to the back.

Raymond Cotten told deputies that he had argued and fought with his uncle, Rowland Cotten, 59, over a bed belonging to relatives. He left his uncle's house, but Rowland Cotten came outside and fired a shotgun as he was running away, the victim told deputies.

Investigators said they found several empty shotgun shells in the yard of Rowland Cotten's house at 79 Pinecrest Drive.

Rowland Cotten was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, assault by pointing a gun, possession of two grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was given a $10,000 secured bond and scheduled to appear in court on March 7.
