CLAYTON, N.C. — A three-hour search that delayed carpool and dismissal Friday afternoon at Clayton's Powhatan Elementary School ended in relief just before 5 p.m.

Nathan Smith, a second-grader, and Nathan Aldstadt, a third-grader, were found and are safe.

The two boys, ages 8 and 9 respectively, wandered away from the school after an afternoon recess, spurring the search of nearby woods and subdivisions.

The property, at 3145 Vinson Road, is braced to the east and south by a wooded area.

The rest of the school's students and staff were being held in the building and dismissal delayed while representatives of the Clayton Police Department and Johnston County Sheriff's Office searched for the pair.

Stacy Beard, spokeswoman for the Town of Clayton, said two-man teams looked for the boys and tracking dogs had been sent into the nearby Glen Laurel subdivision as part of the search.
